Girl Rising tells the stories of seven girls from seven different countries, each of whom realises their dream: to get an education.
It premiered on CNN in Australia on Monday June 17. For upcoming screening times on CNN in Australia please go to http://www.foxtel.com.au/whats-on/tv-guide/default.htm and search “Girl Rising” by choosing the tab “next 14 days”.
Directed by Academy Award nominee Richard E. Robbins, the first-person stories in the feature length documentary are voiced by Academy Award winners Australia’s Cate Blanchett (Haiti), Anne Hathaway (Afghanistan) and Meryl Streep (Ethiopia), as well as Salma Hayek (Peru), Chloe Moretz (Egypt), Selena Gomez (Sierra Leone) and Kerry Washington (Nepal).
Says Meryl Streep: “Educating women and girls has the most optimistic, positive effects on families, communities and economies worldwide. If to see it is to know it, this film delivers hope: reasonable, measurable, tangible hope that the world can be healed and helped to a better future.”
The first documentary acquired by CNN Films, Girl Rising opens with news footage of Pakistan schoolgirl and education campaigner Malala Yousafzai, who was shot by the Taliban on her way home from school in October 2012.
