Garmin introduces next-gen GPS dog tracking: Follow dogs on handheld, in vehicle, or on wrist

SYDNEY, Australia – 7 July 2016, Garmin Australia today announced new capabilities to its GPS dog tracking system, including the new Astro® 430, a GPS and GLONASS dog tracking handheld that can track up to 20 dogs at a range of up to seven kilometres, and is capable of updating their location every 2.5 seconds. The unit can be used in conjunction with the new DriveTrack™ 70 LMT, a seven inch touchscreen dashboard navigator that tracks dogs from inside a vehicle and navigates to them. In addition, hunters can now see their dogs’ whereabouts on any fēnix® 3 watch. The capabilities extend to existing Alpha tracking and training systems as well.

“This groundbreaking, industry-standard Garmin dog tracking device is a first for the Australian market,” said Adam Howarth, General Manager Garmin Australasia. “And the new DriveTrack 70 LMT demonstrates that Garmin has heard hunters loud and clear, answering their desire to track wide-ranging dogs from their ute on a large, easy-to-read display. And the ability to check a dog’s status at a glance of the wrist is as handy as it is cool.”

In addition to increased dog capacity and faster update rate, the Astro 430 comes pre-loaded with TOPO Lite Australia and New Zealand and a free one-year subscription to BirdsEye Satellite Imagery. The new handheld also includes enhanced Hunt Metrics dog performance data like distance travelled, time afield, and an automatic accounting of how many times a dog has treed or pointed game – valuable statistics in evaluating a dog’s performance.

The Astro 430 works with the new DriveTrack 70 LMT navigator for use inside a vehicle. The large, seven inch pinch-to-zoom touchscreen display makes it easy to locate a pack of up to 20 dogs, updated every 2.5 seconds. The DriveTrack includes preloaded City Navigator Australia New Zealand for turn-by-turn guidance, TOPO Lite Australia and New Zealand.

When afield, data from the Astro 430 can be viewed on any Garmin fēnix 3 GPS watch, providing a hands-free glance at a dog’s distance, direction, and vibration alerts when a dog trees or points game.

The Astro 430 is sold separately or in a bundle with a T 5  dog device. In addition, the Astro 430 is compatible with the TT 15 devices (provides tracking only – no electronic training capability).

The Astro 430 and DriveTrack 70 LMT will be available in July 2016. The Astro 430 handheld will have a Recommended Retail Price of AU$699 and AU$1049 for Astro 430 / T5 bundle. The DriveTrack 70 LMT will have a RRP of AU$599.
